Hainault is a Province of the Low-Countries, and Gand the chief Town in Flan∣ders, and Bruxelles the chief Town of the Dukedome of Brabant. It is the only one to offer a proper, literary verse translation of all the original prophecies, and to identify the historical sources of the prophecies. L'auteur joue sur notre credibilité et le mystère autour de Nostradamus, mais dans des notes funestes et morbides.

His quatrains, published in 1555 as Les Prophéties, have never gone out of print and have been claimed to have predicted the execution of Charles I, the Great Fire of London, the French Revolution, the rise and fall of Napoleon and Hitler, the shooting of JFK, the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, the 9/11 attacks, the 2015 mass murders in Paris, even the abdication of King Charles III (of which more later). The Author hath darkned this Stanza with so many barbarous words, as Camp Ascop, drowned Island, Darton, Navel of the World, that it is very like either he did not understand himself, or would not be understood by others. The most comprehensive collection of books on religion, mythology, folklore, and the esoteric ever assembled. Some of them are chilling, literal descriptions of events, giving specific or near-specific names, geographic locations, astrological configurations, and sometimes actual dates. But prophecy is a tricky business at best, and much of what is claimed for Nostradamus is based on mis-translation, over-optimistic interpretation or corrupt texts. It is this quality of both vagueness and specificity which allows each new generation to reinterpret Nostradamus.

If this prophecy is indeed related to our current age, there may be a faint silver lining contained in the words ‘seven months’. There is no difficulty but in the last Verse, where you must observe that Loire, Saone, Rhosne, and Gardon, which for the Verses sake is contracted into Gar; are Rivers of France, which are threatned here of overflowing, and causing the death of many people. Also, my son, I beseech you not to exercise your mind upon such reveries and vanities as drain the body and incur the soul's perdition, and which trouble our feeble frames. Reputedly, the soldiers who desecrated his tomb for the final time were ambushed on their way back to base and killed to the last man.Hence the headline in the Guardian on Monday 5 July 1999: “Nostradamus wrong (please ignore if the world ended yesterday). Either way, it’s safe to assume that he was telling us not to be surprised if 2022 is the year that inflation and hunger lead to rebellion. The second Verse signfieth, that all the Kings of the Earth shall be subdued by him that is Lord of Lords and King of Kings. According to Mario Reading's interpretation of Nostradamus' premonitions, 'Les Propheties' speaks of the death of Queen Elizabeth.

For by the latter, with the help of inspiration and divine revelation, and continual calculations, I have set down my prophecies in writing. Fearing lest this occult philosophy be condemned, I did not therefore wish to make known its dire import; also fearful that several books which had lain hidden for long centuries might be discovered, and of what might become of them, after reading them I presented them to Vulcan. Emperour, who sacked Rome, took the Pope Prisoner, and filled it with more horror and slaughter than Hannibal did, though a Heathen. But the prophecy’s veracity is in doubt because it didn’t appear in print until long after that fatal encounter. Some people believe that his prophecies have predicted actual events, such as the death of Henry II, the French Revolution, the rise of Napoleon, the rise of Adolf Hitler, and the 9/11 attacks. He thinks that the “African leader” is a reference to the South African-born tech billionaire Elon Musk and his plans to colonise Mars. The resulting quatrains (four line verses) are oblique and elliptical, and use puns, anagrams and allegorical imagery.
