Description

The following year, she and her sister Alice went to Germany and were the first women students at the universities of Munich and Leipzich. Edith Hamilton's mythology succeeds like no other book in bringing to life for the modern reader the Greek, Roman and Norse myths that are the keystone of Western culture-the stories of gods and heroes that have inspired human creativity from antiquity to the present. Some of the tales have a really insidious tone that I think could make for some chilling cinematics.

But it’s special because it is a cohesive, somewhat comprehensive, and clear retelling of the many stories of gods and heroes of ancient Greece and Rome. Edith Hamilton and her sister were among the first women to audit classes (her sister published an autobiography detailing their life in Germany even).

Easy to find online references for individual myths, often more thorough, but Hamilton and Bullfinch were the books we had kicking around the house in childhood, pulling the stories together. Mythology" even comes with a bunch of nifty illustrations, done by someone with the improbable name of Steele Savage (with a great fondness for winged horses, apparently). Moreover, the one thing I expect at the very least from an encyclopedia of mythology is a good overview. What stood out for me in this audiobook was the transparency of its sources as it retold the Greek myths.

It has been reissued since then by several publishers, including its 75th anniversary illustrated edition. I also enjoyed how the author included different versions of the tales and who originally wrote these down- for example, there are different versions of Jason on the Argo, whether Atalanta was part of the Argo or not and a different tale of Ipigneia’s demise (which I especially loved as her story was so sad! Quoted works are cited (informally) and follow fair use laws (including public domain and less than 10%/500 words). Historiadora e tradutora, Hamilton figura hoje entre os clássicos da história da literatura e cultura clássicas. Filtering the golden essence from the mass of classical literature, she proved how applicable to our daily lives are the humor and wisdom of more than 2,000 years ago. This is an ambitious work, which Edith Hamilton brings to life Greek and Roman Mythology (mainly and Norse partly), being a keystone of Western Culture.
