For more experienced players, there’s the MPE functionality and this is one of the most affordable ways to get into the MPE control world. If I remember correctly, it’s just “which overlay, what serial number, and which sensor was it detected on”.

Scaler: A full-width 17-key chromatic keyboard layout oriented towards instruments like harp or vibraphone. Synth: A double-width module implementing an octave and a half of keyboard, with a selection of buttons in a row at the top. Combined with the ability to layer sounds, you can make multi-part, multi-instrument projects and then export them as audio mixdowns, stems or MIDI files. The app allows you to add multiple parts of different bar lengths and quantise or delete the recordings, though not edit in any greater depth than that. It’s not always clear where to find certain tools, what section you are currently in or how to get somewhere else. The controller modules worked well, especially the bubbles, but without visual indication of state, the various octave and mode buttons felt less useful. I was strangely able to fiddle with the exact placement of my fingers to get the full aftertouch values while in the same “general” horizontal plane so I think there are 8 horizontal strips, with even and odd strips being shared for the 4 horizontal “areas. Available with the Pro option, the Joué Editor software allows you to edit each MIDI message sent by the Play Pads. I reviewed the Sensel Morph back in October, but mentioned the Joué in that article since I first came across the latter some months before that.

The factory settings of the modules put them on distinct MIDI channels, while the MIDI controller numbers generally go from 1 upwards, but these settings are all editable. And another one which I use with synths that dont support MPE but do support polyphonic aftertouch messages - this version still takes MPE from the Joue, but converts to single channel midi, monitors the active notes on each channel and turns CC74 from each channel into per-note polyphonic aftertouch, and uses ‘most recently pressed note’ to choose which pitch bend message to retain. Anyway yes, I would use your script if you wrote one, thanks so very much for investigating this possibility!Switch pads on the fly to instantly transform your Joue Play into a guitar, piano, drums or keyboard and explore their assigned sound banks. Combine all controllers into one device that you'll always have at hand on the go, in the studio or on stage. I’ve been wanting something like a groovebox but the Joué has enough lateral accuracy without a pad to have a decent interface. It feels gorgeous but it’s heavier than it looks – though this gives it a reassuringly pro-grade feel. The Joué application identifies the board and pad immediately, and shows installed packs and projects, including a selection of how-to examples, like Massive Attack’s Tear Drop or Billie Eilish’s Bad Guy.
