Above all, its a homage to the spirit of collaboration - more exactly to collaborativeness, a word which brings a red underlining from Microsoft but which describes the spirit of collaboration (rather than just the action) and avoids the negative wartime associations). Their loyalties lie with the old man, Abdallah, who has been working there all his life and it had become his home. g. the mention of Max-Pol Fouchet “no longer brooding over Simon Hié, who left him to marry Camus before cheating on him in turn.

Charlot was an advocate for Algerian independence and the story is peppered with historical incidents of violence and massacres during the war for independence. The Financial Times and its journalism are subject to a self-regulation regime under the FT Editorial Code of Practice. From that passionate little room, entitled to the "true riches" of life, the first editions of memorable texts come out, including the debut of young genius Camus.

I also found the entries did not ring true sometimes when the author used them to communicate a historical fact e. During WWII he was also publishing for the Free French movement in contrary to the laws of Vichy France. We saw a very personal insight into part of Algeria’s history, as well as a perspective offering a wider view on this political unrest. This blog is dedicated to book reviews, everything related to literature, travel as well as reflections on art and slow living.

The young man is literally told to trash the books and he struggles to figure out what he actually should do with them. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had been aware from the start that it was based on a real person (should have read the cover more carefully! This book has had a profound impact upon what I believe about the world, about myself, and about the role that literature and art plays within culture. When the schools finally were integrated, the French boys wore white shirts and ties but the Arab boys were made to wear a fez with a purple tassel and an orange jacket – just a made-up getup that had nothing to do with their traditional dress.

Ryad's story in the present day setting is more of a comedic fish-out-of-water tale as the young intern tries to cope with his task.

I have never been to Algeria and am not very knowledgeable about the Algerian revolution or about the country. I am pretty much a pre-sold believer in any books about books, libraries and publishing and I was completely captivated by Adimi's world building here of Charlot's life and of present day Algiers.
