The Elite Zumo’s spec sheet totally belies what a well-rounded trainer this is. The cheapest trainer on test, it’s also the lightest and has the lightest flywheel, the claimed accuracy is joint worst at ±3% and the maximum resistance is the lowest at 1,350W. The slope simulation stands out as being second shallowest at 12%.To be useful, a trainer has to offer variable resistance. Yes, you can spin away and varying your cadence will give you some training benefits, but working against varying resistance will give you more. As mentioned above, the absolute power accuracy may not be as precise as a premium smart trainer, but it's not going to be enormously inconsistent. If you have a power meter on your outdoor bike, you can always use that for your indoor power measurement, so you get consistent results indoors and out. If you're not sure how to decide on the best budget smart trainer for your needs, out buyer's guide will answer some key questions. For further advice, it's worth reading our guide to the best smart trainers that we've tested here at Cycling Weekly. What makes a trainer smart? This is a super basic trainer mat, which is exactly what you'll see me use. All it does is stop sweat for getting places it shouldn't (it also helps with vibrations too). And finally, note that I tend to focus on trainers that have some element of technology in them. It’s not that I think that all non-technology trainers are the same (cause they aren’t…well…except that most are), but it’s because that’s just what I happen to review the most here. Things to Consider:

It’ll connect to the rear of the trainer, where you can see the LED status lights just above it. These lights indicate power (that it’s on), Bluetooth connectivity (Blue), and ANT+ connectivity (Green). I also tried disconnecting the trainer from its power supply and reconnecting after 5 minutes hoping that this would reboot the trainer. The result was speeds of over 100 km/h and power of 500 to 1300 Watts. Utterly ridiculous values. Elite had no knowledge of this one. After installing the board, the issue is still there (only after 15 minutes of ride on the new board) For this section I was constantly oscillating. I believe I had joined up with one of the Zwift Pacer bots, and you can see the rubber-banding as you go in/out of the draft zone. But the Tuo is doing a pretty damn impressive job of holding the wattage accuracy here. Also, I’d say I’m honestly surprised that *ANY* US bike shop would ever say that service/support was better for Tacx pre-Garmin. There’s just no way. Now, I start to do some light climbing while increasing my power, and you can see there’s Joe, it is entirely common for shifting to vary a bit between a bike and different wheels. Wheel-off trainers fall into the same category. For ANT+ FE-C, devices such as the Garmin, Stages, Wahoo, and Hammerhead cycling units support controlling the trainer straight from your head unit. This also means you can re-ride your outside rides (elevation changes and all) without any other software.

I suspect what’s probably tinting some of the rose-colored glasses of some shops is the transition on the distribution/MAP side from-Garmin and post-Garmin. With Garmin comes a different set of rules. Whereas pre-Garmin, rules around things like MAP sales and such didn’t exist with Tacx. Further, pre-Garmin there wasn’t COVID. I’m not entirely sure what the exact issue is here. You might think that it was the relatively light flywheel struggling with the steeper gradients, but the 7% inclines I first noticed the issue on were easily handled by the Elite Zumo – which has a lighter flywheel and a lower maximum gradient. In all seriousness, it’s a dumpster fire. But the good news is that as long as you simply read the few lines below – I’ll make it easy for you. And none of it is technically hard. It’s just unclear. The actual build, with good instructions, would take at most 3-5 minutes. Direct drive turbo trainers are the undisputed last word in indoor bike training, but the one area that they do lose out to classic or wheel-on trainers such as the Elite Tuo is portability.

You’ll notice I said ‘NEO Series’, and not just the NEO 2T. Because frankly, all of them are still really solid. The NEO 2 added some minor internal hardware over the NEO 1, and eventually Tacx plans to release Garmin Cycling Dynamics to the NEO 2T and NEO 2 based on that (but a year later…it’s still not actually there). Whereas the NEO 2T got substantially increased power from an internals standpoint. Now, all you need to do every subsequent time with the Tuo is simply ensure that your tire is pumped up to the same 110PSI value. To prove this, I haven’t re-done the calibration since mid-September, and the rides you see in this review include basically spot-on accuracy data from this morning. Ultimately, I think this is actually why it makes the H3 look to be reading high, when it’s not. It’s staying static. My bet here would be if you grabbed those Assioma Duo’s again, and ideally let them bed-in for a ride first (the norm on Duo’s) then a calibration, that you’d see them read slightly higher than your H3.

Moving along to the entire group, there are also very minor differences in how you mount your bike to each one in terms of the clasp/lever, but that’s too a wash. About the only notable difference here is that the Saris Magnus/M2 has a nifty resistance knob that makes it easy to ensure your bike is at the same resistance setting each time. It’s actually kinda brilliant. Just like the Elite Tuo with the toaster lever getting you to the same exact point each time is. Once I installed the alloy resistance unit to the frame (and after fighting with the screws and washers for a bit), I installed my bike. At first, I installed my ‘cross bike on the unit with a smooth 35mm tire, hoping to take advantage of the ability to keep my training wheelset on. When trying to engage the resistance roller, I noticed that the tire was too big for the default “Road Channel” (the one closer to the front of the bike), and I had to switch to the secondary “MTB Channel.” After taking the unit apart again and reinstalling the resistance unit, I installed my bike. At this point, I noticed that the tire was not engaging properly on the roller. This time the wheel was too far from the roller and slipping at the tightest setting of the resistance knob. Mid December I got the infamous solid blue light issue, and Elite decided to send me a replacement board. Next, from a technology standpoint, they fixed the sprint overshooting issue this summer. In fact, both the H1 and H2 trainers got that firmware update – but it meant this was more accurate now.Elite Tuo kombinerer behovet for cykeltræning med et overlegent Italiensk design, der gør den flot at have stående fremme i ethvert hjem. Den giver samtidig en god stabil køreoplevelse, som de fleste vil kunne lide. In all, the Zumo is super portable thanks to its carry handle, foldable legs and general lightweight build. At the same time, it’s very stable thanks to its wide footprint and the resistance is very nicely controlled and feels very smooth despite the smaller flywheel. In the sports world there are essentially two camps: ANT+ & Bluetooth Smart. Virtually all devices use one or both of these low-power technologies to transmit and capture information such as heart rate, power, speed, cadence, and more.
